Psalm 63:3–4 reads: “Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.” The words love and better than life become a greater-than sign between Love and Life. The sign turns upward, like hands lifted, then becomes the Praise Always mark. Finally the words praise and as long as I live become the name Praise Always.

Praise Always takes its name and its mark from Psalm 63. David wrote it in the wilderness of Judah, with nothing around him but dry ground, and still concluded that God’s steadfast love is better than life itself.
The mark is that sentence, drawn. The greater-than sign says love is greater than life. Turned upward, it becomes hands lifted in praise, and in written music it becomes the marcato, the sign for a note sung with full force.
The name is the response the verse gives. Because his love is better than life, we praise him, as long as we live.
